was spent on the Israeli withdrawal
from Lebanon.
Yossi Lichterman, 9, of Huntington
Woods, wrote U.S. Rep. Debbie
Stabenow, D-Mich. He congratulated
Stabenow on her election to the U.S.
Senate and told her to try to support
Israel. "Israel is in a bad situation and
needs our help," he said as his mother,
Susan, and sister, Allie, 6, looked on.
At the beginning of the afternoon
program, a live, two-way phone conver-
sation from Israel was amplified so all
in the room could hear. Speaking were
Douglas Bloom of Birmingham and
Nora Barron of Bloomfield Hills, chairs
of Federation's Partnership 2000 pro-
gram; Tanya Mazor-Posner, Federation
staff for Partnership 2000; and citizens
of Nazareth Ilit in the central Galilee,
Michigan Jewry's partner region.
"We were welcomed with open
arms," Barron said from Nazareth Ilit.
"We put smiles on their faces — they
are our family here."

She urged Michigan Jews to show
their support by participating in the
Michigan Unity Mission to Israel, a
Federation/Jewish News-sponsored trip
scheduled for Jan. 14-19.
After the event, Lt. Col. Erez
Winner of the Israel Defense Forces
said he appreciated the response.
"If it's sending money or sending
their support by letters, I think it's very
important for us in Israel that there are
communities like this," said Winner,
who showed videotapes of the violence
to a rapt crowd of concerned Jews.
"It strengthens us to understand that
we're not totally alone. Sometimes, by
reading or watching only the media,
you get the picture that it's us against
the world. This is pretty reassuring."
Jewish Federation CEO Robert
Aronson gave details of the Michigan
Unity Mission to about 30 interested
individuals.
But he said Israel Action Day wasn't
about getting people to sign up.
"Every effort we make
helps and builds momen-
tum in the community,"
he said. "I think it is
unfortunately easy for
people to kind of block
Israel out and distance
themselves from Israel,
and the only response of
our Jewish community
should be to get closer,
not farther.
"An event like this helps
a lot." ❑
