DECEMBER 2000 • STYLE AT THE IN

t's that time of the year. . . Chanukah, New Year's.
What better way to highlight the true beginning of
the 21st century than with special timepieces? We've
asked some local jewelers to model their favorite
watch, and share why they wear that particular brand.
As you can see, these watches do more than just tell
time. Some have a perpetual calendar with moon phase
display, while others can withstand the depth of the
ocean. Today, watches speak of craftsmanship, history and
style. Note that not one jeweler wore the same watch or
even one from the same manufacturer. Thanks to all the
jewelers who participated in this timely story.
While planning this feature, Howard Tapper of
Tapper's Jewelry called to tell me about an exciting event
at the store. Tapper's was the first stop of the Kurt Klaus
world tour of IWC, International Watch Company, based
in Schaffausen, Switzerland. I attended the private event
along with several watch collectors in the community.
Kurt Klaus, head of movement design for IWC, enlight-
ened the group about watch making. Klaus is a master
watchmaker and the inventor of the perpetual calendar of
the IWC Da Vinci, launched in 1985. IWC didn't need to
worry about Y2K with Klaus, known as the Einstein of
Schaffhausen, because the numeral 19 smoothly changed
to 20 on the Da Vinci watch and in another
hundred years the date switches to 2100. (The
IWC Da Vinci perpetual calendar does not
need to be changed until the year 2499.)
Talking about collections, in our passions col-
umn we feature Doug Bloom of Birmingham
with his exciting model trains. Read about his
fascinating miniature world.
On a sweet note, we showcase the family-run
business Scher Delites. This bakery/confec-
tionery shop creates novelty cakes, cookies and
even plans parties. Stop in and meet the family — Jackie
Scher, Warren Allgren, Lori Blum and Cissy Gordon.
This is the final issue for the year 2000 for Style
magazine at the Jewish News. We hope to continue an
excellent sense of timing for the year 2001. Feel free to
drop us a line and let us know about a passion or trend in
the community. We want to know what makes you tick.
Happy Chanukah and Happy New Year.
