Fifty children from Detroit's Harms
Elementary School enjoyed a week-
end camping experience at Camp
Maas in Ortonville in late October,
courtesy of the Detroit Jewish
Initiative. DJI is a project of the
Jewish Community Council and the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit.
In its second year, the camping
weekend is a part of DJI's Southwest
Community Connection, which fos-
ters relations between Detroit's
Jewish and Latino communities. The
program also matches Jewish health-
care volunteers with the Southwest
Detroit Community Health and
Social Services Center.
The children were chaperoned by
their parents and a staff of DJI vol-
unteers led by Barbara Blum and
Kim Davis. During the weekend,
they enjoyed various activities,
including fishing, making candles
and doughnuts, a hayride and a bon-
fire. Students also discussed the solar
system and the environment and
participated in a cultural exchange
of ideas on the Latino and Jewish
cultures.

Entrepreneurial Partnership and the
Detroit Recreation Centers Project.
