Although Cohn belongs to a Conservative synagogue, he has a strong commitment to the entire Jewish community, especially the Orthodox side. His father grew up in an Orthodox home and always sup- ported Orthodox Jewish causes; he chaired the Yeshiva Beth Yehudah's building committee for many years. Both father and son served as chair- man of the annual Yeshiva dinner; Avern was the Yeshiva's 1995 Golden Torah honoree. They also were the first father-son recipients of Detroit Jewry's highest honor, the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's Fred M. Butzel Memorial Award for Distinguished Community Service — Irwin in 1961, Avern in 1988. Avern is a past president of the Jewish Federation and past vice presi- dent of the American Jewish Committee. Earlier this year, he donat- ed $1 million to establish a fund, through Federation's Millennium Campaign for Detroit's Jewish Future, to benefit Orthodox day-school educa- tion. It's called the Samuel and Maly Cohn Millennium Fund, named in memory of Cohn's paternal grandpar- ents who died in 1936. Jewish Federation CEO Robert Aronson said Judge Cohn's ACLU award is a fitting tribute because he is "totally committed to all aspects of social justice, and he is very pas- sionate about the Jewish community and the Detroit community in gen- eral. He has been a true leader for many years." ❑ (most mfrs) The evening honoring Judge Cohn at. the Charles E. Wright Museum of African American History, 315 E.
