A GREAT MAN HAS FALLEN

We share in the grief of family, friends and the entire community
at the tragic and untimely passing of

practically anyone who would listen
— telling the Norwegians about "the
American way" and the need for inter-
national understanding, peace and
cooperation. He also became a tour
guide of sorts, taking relatives, friends
and, sometimes, total strangers on
spur-of-the-moment jaunts to famous
Norway attractions.
"I remember when he first had signs
of his illness," Gundersen recalled at
the Hermelin home. "It was near the
end of 1998, and he was experiencing
pain in his eyes, and he told me he also
was feeling sort of fuzzy. Since he was
going home for the holidays anyway, he
said he would go to the doctor — and
that's when they diagnosed him."
Hermelin's final trip to Norway was
last July for the annual Independence
Day party at the Embassy; he had offi-
cially resigned in January.
"He gave a speech and there wasn't a
dry eye in the audience," recalls Mrs.
Hermelin.
Gundersen added: "When he was in
Oslo, the residence was full of family,
friends and laughter. Now, everything
is quiet again."
