suming and not to be identified as Jews. This was an impossible task for
David Hermelin.
Upon our arrival in Leningrad, David and Doreen were detained for an
extended period. The KGB thought it was a little strange that two not-
too-tall people came with seven huge suitcases loaded with 50 kosher
salamis and prayer books for a whole synagogue.
The first night in the hotel, David had the band playing "Hava
Nagila" and then proceeded to get everyone out on the dance floor to
do a hora.
When we traveled on to Minsk and got stuck for hours at the airport,
David took out the kosher salamis and began making sandwiches (he
brought rye bread, too) for all the Russian passengers. David could

never hide his joy of being Jewish.
I know that the Jews of Minsk will never forget David Hermelin, and
we here in Detroit will never forget this great man.
David Hermelin's life was an example of leadership and giving. He
showed us that it is not what a person has that is the measure of his
worth, but rather what he gave and what he did. David Hermelin had
such a positive influence on Jewish values, Jewish thought, the land of
Israel, as well as his generosity to so many good causes. His belief in
humanity the world over will always be his legacy of what a "crown of a
good name" really means.
David Hermelin will be missed by everyone. His memory will live on
with us each day as we continue our work to make this a better world. ❑

will never
be the same!
