S "Lovely Ladies," a scene from "Les Miserables." 0-1 is and trying to find redemption and a new life to start over again. In every city, we have to start over again, meet- ing new stagehands, trying to discover our niche and opening." Strober has loved being on stage since she was a preschooler taking bal- let lessons. She spent summers at the Stage Door Manor Performing Arts Center in New York. After appearing in high school productions, she went on to study theater at Skidmore College, where her instructors helped make her career choice. "I went to the National Theater Institute in Connecticut in my junior year and then to London, where I interned with the Royal National Theatre," recalls Strober, who made time to visit Israel during spring break. - "I returned to Skidmore and after graduation was invited to star in Barefoot in the Park with a friend's pro- duction company in California. I decided to stay because I ended up getting a manager and an agent." Besides landing lead roles in Gypsy and My Fair Lady in West Coast the- aters, Strober did some small parts on TV and in films, including playing a bridesmaid in the recent film Coyote Ugly. At the encouragement of friends, she went to an audition call for Les Miz and got to play the person who buys hair from Fantine, who sells it to help support her young daughter Cosette. "I think I've been blessed with a singing voice, and I've worked really hard at training it," says Strober, who used to vocalize at Los Angeles senior centers every Shabbat. "I'd like to study cantorial soloist singing when I get back to the East Coast." Strober recently visited Michigan to see a Tina Turner concert, scheduled during a day off from the play. With more time to spend in the city during the run of the show, she plans to become acquainted with the Detroit Jewish community. One of the people she will be in touch with is Robyn Grauer, youth educator at Congregation Shaarey Zedek. The two were introduced by Grauer's mom, who became friendly with the young entertainer in Cleveland. "I've never met an actress on tour, so this is a very exciting prospect," says Grauer, who moved to the area about a year ago. ❑ Les Miserables will be performed 8 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m. Sundays and 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, Dec. 5- Jan.13, at the Fisher Theatre.
