Marilynn Rosenthal, professor of sociol-
ogy and director of the program in
health policy studies at the University of
Michigan-Dearborn, recently had her
research on medical mishaps quoted in
New Yorker magazine.
The article, "When Good Doctors Go
Bad" by Atul Gawande, appeared Aug. 7
and included many references to work in
Rosenthal's book The Incompetent Doctor,
published by England's Open University
Press in 1995.

Southfield resident Judge Stephen
Cooper of the 46th District Court was
presented with the Communication and
Leadership Award from Toastmasters
International District 28. His selection
was based on the leadership and commu-
nication skills he demonstrated when
speaking before audiences on topics
including diversity and his work in pub-
lic education.

Common Ground Sanctuary, an
Oakland County non-profit crisis inter-
vention agency, has added to its roster of
officers and directors. Among them are
Richard Astrein, co-owner of Astrein's
Creative Jewelers in Birmingham, first
vice chair of the board of directors; Gabe
Werba, principal, Durocher Dixson
Werba, public and financial relations
organization in Detroit, second vice
chair; and Judith Rosenberg of
Birmingham, director.

Norman Tepley, Oakland University
professor of physics, recently received an
award from the Michigan Epilepsy
Foundation "for bringing help and hope
to people with epilepsy" Tepley is also
scientific director of the Oakland
University-Henry Ford Hospital
Neuromagnetism Laboratory.

Stuart J. Rogoff, formerly of Southfield,
has been named vice president of the
California Region for the National
Neurofibromatosis Foundation, with
regional headquarters in
Los Angeles. He will
oversee major gift fund-
raising, cause-related
marketing campaigns
and industry-based
councils and carn-
paigns to support NF
medical research and
services.
Most recently, Rogoff was director of
development at City of Hope in the
national development headquarters in
Los Angeles.
