DETROIT JEWISH NEWS COVER STORY Page 82 Magnificent Menorot I f you headed to the mall this afternoon on the day after Thanksgiving, there's no doubt you were inundated with symbols of the season — the Christmas season, that is. (So, OK, you may have seen a dreidel or two.) Ready for a change of pace? After a suc- cessful exhibit in 1998 and at the invita- tion of the Somerset Collection South in Troy, the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit has again planned a pre-Chanukah Menorah Art Show. The show runs Nov. 28-Dec. 11, in the wing outside Neiman Marcus. Featuring nearly 30 invited artists — both Jewish and non-Jewish — and their sculptural talents, the exhibit, says GAIL Federation's Kari Alterman, will "reach out ZIMMERMAN to the general community and show what A & E Editor the holiday is all about." And while you're doing your Chanukah shopping, get ready for a few verses of "Oh, Chanukah, Oh, Chanukah." Two computers flank the family-friendly exhibit, giv- ing children an opportunity to use an interactive CD-ROM that offers a Chanukah sing-along, as well as other holiday activities. For a preview of these beautiful and one-of-a-kind menorot, which will available for sale, please see our story "Magnificent Menorot," which begins in Arts & Entertainment on page 82. Through them, we pass our history and heritage from one generation to the next. On page 10, Staff Writer Shelli Liebman Dorfman tells the story of Friendship Circle's quest for a learning and therapy center for children with special needs — children who may be physically, mentally or emotionally challenged but from whom we can learn much about what it means to overcome. On page 49, Shelli writes about the 86th annual dinner of the Yeshiva Beth Yehudah last Sunday. Among the high points was Rabbi Yerachmiel Stewart's boys choir, whose performance was as rich ROBERT A. as it was resonating. SKLAR In a tragic story on page 25, the Jewish Editor Telegraphic Agency's Naomi Segal recounts Monday's terrorist attack on a school bus carrying Jewish settlers in the Gaza Strip; two Israelis were killed and nine others, including five children, were hurt in the gutless — and heartless — bombing. At the yeshiva dinner, I was touched by choir member Shauli Baum's tribute to Golden Torah winner Rudolph Newman. The respectful 12-year-old from Oak Park told how Newman has been "a great fighter for his people and his community." In Shauli I saw all that is good about our children. May our children's hopes rise up to the sky and their actions make the world a better place. Shabbat Shalom!
