keeping his feet on the ground, stay-
ing true to himself and keeping his
mind clear."
Elliot Wilhelm, curator of film at
the Detroit Institute of Arts and host
of the WTVS series Film Festival,
recently showed two Cukor classic
movies, The Women and Little
Women.
"George Cukor had a great ability
to translate what was on the printed
pages of scripts into sympathetic peo-
ple to be seen by the audience,
Wilhelm says. "He was able to put
himself into the shoes of the charac-
ters, guide actors into expressing the
humanity in the roles and ultimately
turn them into human beings we can
identify with.
"At the time Cukor made the films
we recently showed, it was rare to
have women portrayed as fully as he
did. There were 135 women in the
"
cast of The Women, and they did not
become caricatures. That has to do
with directing talent."
Trachtenberg describes Cukor as
happy with a life essentially devoted
to career. Before his death in 1983,
the director made a trip to Israel for
the first time.
"Cukor was really respectful of the
Jewish religion, but he had a great deal
of belief in the power of the individual
more than organized religion,"
Trachtenberg says. "His parents
weren't very religious, and that's the
way he was raised. It's not something
that he [initiated] on his own. His trip
to Israel was for a vacation and to look
around."
Cukor, who won his first Oscar for
his late-career work on My Fair Lady,
joins a lengthy list of Jewish artists
chosen for the American Masters
series, including playwright Arthur
A
44'
Miller, composer Aaron Copland,
theater impresario Joseph Papp, pho-
tographer Alfred Stieglitz and actor
Dustin Hoffman.
Trachtenberg chose actress Jean
Simmons for program narrator
because she worked with Cukor,
appearing in The Actress, knew the
director personally and was able to
give a performance instead of simply
reading the information.
"I think George Cukor was an
innovator in many ways, and I hope
the film and the book help move [the
public's understanding] of that for-
ward." Trachtenberg says.
