sees the harnessing of the mind's powers
and "self care" as one part of what he
terms a "three-legged stool" system, of
health care. The other two "legs" are
conventional drugs and pharmaceutical
treatment, and medical procedures
including surgery.
Benson estimates that 60 to 90 per-
cent of visits to doctors are due to stress-
related health issues, such as asthma,
angina pectoris, skin rashes, many forms
of pain, rheumatoid arthritis, congestive
heart failure, PMS and anxiety.
"\X7e know that belief can lead to
healing, or at least improvement, in 50
percent to 90 percent of diseases,"
Benson says. "They're all influenced by
belief.
"We in medicine have made fun of
belief by calling it the 'placebo effect,' or
insisting 'ifs all in your head.' Yet, belief
is one of the most powerful healing tools
vve have in our therapeutic arsenal.
According to medical research, faith in
God is good for us."
Honoree Brenda Rosenberg agrees.
"Herbert Benson is the No. 1 expert in
the world on this subject; there's so
much empirical evidence that prayer can
help."
Rosenberg was fashion director of
Saks Fifth Avenue, vice president of
fashion at J.L. Hudson Company and
senior vice president for Burdine's and
Federated Allied department stores. She
designed and manufactured her own
line of upscale sportswear and is an
acclaimed photographer.
"I thought I had it all; the perfect
life," she says. "But I felt something was
missing. I started studying and investi-
gating. Now I understand the power we
have within us when we learn how to
integrate and balance the mind, body
and spirit. I feel like my mission in life is
to share the information I've learned
with others." ❑
