Jewish Vocational Service in
Southfield has received $87,000 in
grants to support its Med-Link pro-
gram, which helps homeless individ-
uals overcome medical barriers to
finding a job.
A grant of $60,000 was provided
by the Jewish Fund, $12,660 by the
DeRoy Testamentary Foundation
and $14,500 from Metro Health
Foundation.
Barbara Nurenberg, JVS executive
director, said many homeless have
chronic histories of alcohol or sub-
stance abuse, medical and psycho-
logical problems. Med-Link helps
determine what medical treatment is
needed, how to locate it and how to
get there.
JVS ensures that services are
received and continued, and that
vocational links are developed to
help people obtain and maintain
employment. JVS is working with
the city of Detroit, Detroit-Wayne
County Community Mental Health
and several non-profit partners on
the project.
