The Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit's Leonard N.
Simons Jewish Community Archives
has acquired documents, pho-
tographs and other historical materi-
al from the Birmingham Temple, the
first congregation of Humanistic
Judaism.
The materials not only document
the evolution of the Farmington
Hills congregation, but also show
another aspect of Jewish diversity
within the broader religious context.
The Jewish Community Archives
will work with staff and volunteers
to have materials ready for the
Birmingham Temple's 40th anniver-
sary in 2003.
Rabbi Sherwin Wine founded the
Humanistic Judaism movement in
Birmingham. It is estimated that
there are more than 50,000 members
in Europe, Israel, North and South
America and Australia.
In 1991, Federation established
the archives to document the history
of the Detroit Jewish community.
Located in the Max M. Fisher
