Food Going
To The Needy

Thanksgiving will be more bountiful
next week for more than 100 local
Jewish families in need.
They'll receive kosher Thanksgiving
food baskets, thanks to the generosity
of the Jeanette and Harry Goldberg
family and Jewish Family Service vol-
unteers.
For 10 years, the Goldbergs of
Farmington Hills have turned contri-
butions from family and friends into
Thanksgiving food baskets. The food
is delivered to the Oak Park-based Yad
Ezra kosher food bank, then distrib-
uted by JFS volunteers.
This year's distribution is Tuesday,
Nov. 21. For information on how to
volunteer or donate, call Michelle
Greenstein at JFS in Southfield, (248)
559-1500.

Rep. Jacobs Breaks
Political Ground

In a historic vote, the
Michigan House
Democratic Caucus
has elected Rep.
Gilda Z. Jacobs, D-
Huntington Woods,
as Democratic floor
leader.
"This is the first
time in the history of Gilda Z Jacobs
the Michigan House
that a woman has been her caucus's
floor leader," said Rep. Pat Lockwood
of Fenton, who chairs the caucus's
election committee.
As floor leader, effective in January,
Jacobs said she hopes to inspire a spirit
of bipartisanship. "We believe the
needs and interests of all our citizens
are much too important to let parti-
sanship get in the way," she said. "We
want our great state to be a land of
opportunity for all."

Labor Zionist
Visits Seminar

Hawk or dove, it's hard to distinguish
which Israeli diplomat, government
official or general is talking when they
come to the United States these days.
The situation was no different when
the 17th annual Midwest seminar of
the World Labor Zionist Alliance

kicked off last week-
end in Southfield.
"We are now fac-
ing the last struggle
for peace," Michael
Landsberg, secretary
general of the
WLZA, told the
ar
crowd of some 35
Michael
members from
Landsberg
Detroit, Cleveland
and Chicago. "If we are successful in
bringing [Palestinian leader Yasser]
Arafat and his people back to the
table, a new movement would start.
But we are closer to a bigger war in
the region."
Landsberg stated positions familiar to
all Israelis who have streamed through
town since the hostilities began —
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak gave
up more land than any previous Israeli
leader; Arafat controls the region;
Likud Parry leader Ariel Sharon didn't
start the crisis; and the Palestinians had
been ready for the past year for the
intifada (uprising) to begin.
