Showing We Care

A

lmost five weeks ago, Detroit Jews converged
on Yeshivat Akiva to stand united, uncondi-
tionally, behind Eretz Yisroel — the Land of
Israel. We stood shoulder to shoul-
e, der to tell the world we embrace our
homeland despite the turmoil and
tragedy confronting it. At the same
time, we demonstrated the depth of
our love for a tiny Mideast nation
percolating with our heritage and
history.
Last week, Detroiters Marta
Rosenthal and Michael Horowitz
joined a whirlwind unity mission to
ROBERT A.
Israel hosted by the United Jewish
SKLAR
Communities (UJC), which repre-
Editor
sents North American federations.
As part of the trip, the Detroit duo
paid a special visit to the central Galilee, Detroit Jewry's
Partnership 2000 region. Their intent was to show, in a
dramatic way, that we care about the region, especially in
a time of unrest.
In January, the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit and the Jewish News have planned a solidarity
trip not only to Jerusalem, but also Migdal HaEmek and
other central Galilee towns. Linked by hope, pride and
Torah, Michigan Jews and their brethren from the region
will meet in friendship.
Indeed, there's something that resonates triumphantly
about momentarily setting aside our individual differ-
ences to underscore a collective commitment to the
Jewish state and all that it represents.
The theme of today's cover package is the amazing
people-to-people connection between the Jews of .
America and those in the Holy Land, 6,000 miles away.
Our exclusive report on last week's visit to the central
Galilee begins on page 6; it's accompanied by an update
on plans for the Michigan Unity Mission to Israel Jan.
14-19. The package, which runs to page 18, includes a
report on President Bill Clinton's latest bid to revive the
peace talks and a report on Israel's more prominent role
at the UJC General Assembly, which met this week in
Chicago.
As Israel struggles to achieve peace in the cauldron
that is the Mideast, the diaspora must rally behind her
financially, militarily, spiritually.
Beyond that, we can help strengthen Israel's reason for
being through a stronger allegiance to mitzvot in our
everyday lives here of home.
As we, as a people, rededicate ourselves to Mideast
peace, may the grace of the rhythm of Torah dance in
our soul.
