AJCongress Seeks
Halt To Violence

New York/JTA — The American Jewish
Congress ran a frill-page ad in the New
York Times that admitted it may have
been wrong to believe that Palestinian
Authority President Yasser Arafat could
be a partner for peace with Israel.
Headlined "It Takes a Big
Organization to Admit it Was Wrong,"
the advertisement calls on the Palestinian
leader to halt the ongoing violence in the
West Bank and Gaza Strip and engage in
what it calls "real peacemaking."

Croatian Youths
Are Remembered

New York/JTA — A plaque commem-
orating 165 Jewish youths killed in
Croatia during World War II was
unveiled at the offices of the Jewish
community in the capital of Zagreb.
The youths, high school and college
students, were taken prisoner in May
1941, one month after the creation of
Croatia's wartime regime, which
backed the Nazis.
The students were later transported
to a death camp.

Hijacking
Ends Quietly

Jerusalem/JTA — The hijacking of a
Russian airliner to southern Israel
ended when the lone Chechen hijacker,
described by authorities as "unstable,"
surrendered and released all 58 passen-

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak,
who had ordered his own plane to
turn homeward last weekend, resumed
his flight to Washington after the inci-

Los Angeles/JTA — The trial date has
been postponed again for a white
supremacist accused of wounding five
people in a shooting rampage at a Los
Angeles Jewish community center and
killing a postal worker in August 1999.
Prosecutors and defense lawyers said
the complexity of the case against
Buford 0. Furrow Jr. makes it neces-

Anti-Rabin Teacher
Back In School

Jerusalem/JTA — Israel's Education
Ministry is allowing a Jewish educator
to resume teaching after he was barred
from Haifa schools for calling on
teachers not to teach Yitzhak Rabin's
legacy or hold memorial services
marking the former prime minister's
assassination.
•
Prior to his reinstatement, Yisrael
Shiran distributed a letter of clarifica-
tion, condemning the assassination
and saying the educators must differ-
entiate between the moral aspects of
the murder and the political elements
of Rabin's legacy.

Exhibit Depicts
Ritual Murder

Prague/JTA — An exhibition dedicat-
ed to the memory of a Czech Jew who
was convicted of ritually murdering a
young Christian woman in 1899 will

The exhibition was organized by
campaigners who believe that Leopold
Hilsner, who came from the Czech
