RUSSIN-LANGUAGE WRITERS

For the first time, the Jewish Book Fair will introduce books by three Russian
writers. They will give separate readings — in Russian — at 4 p.m. Sunday,
Nov. 12, at the Jewish Community Center in Oak Park.
Rivka Latinsky, the JCC's Russian Acculturation director, says the tal-
ented trio includes poet Mark Mordukhovich, a member of the Union of
Poets and Writers of the former Soviet Union, and poet Vladimir
Kapitulsky. The third Russian writer, Yevgeniaya Rakhkovskaya, will read
from In the Small Cold Room Our Love is Alive, his notes written during
the Leningrad Blockade of World War II.

LEGAL EAGLE from page 89

"It's fun for me to get out and meet
people," he says. "I find that no mat-
ter where I am, people have many of
the same general questions. I boiled
the answers down into a little speech
that explains how I write a novel and
how I broke into publishing. Then I
take questions [that come out of that .
information]."
Margolin does his writing at an
office in the early morning and also
uses the space for his community serv-
ice work, which centers on an organi-
zation that introduces study skills to
elementary and junior high school stu-
dents.
His exercise takes the form of a daily
swim with his father and golf with his

wife of 32 years, Doreen. The couple
have two grown children.
"I loved being a lawyer and had a
really fascinating career," says
Margolin, currently drafting his eighth
thriller, which builds on an issue of
product liability and a pill suspected
of causing birth defects. "Now, I'm
having an equally good time writing. I
don't have any grandiose literary plan
when I do a book. I write to enter-
tain." LI

Phillip Margolin speaks at the
49th Annual Jewish Book Fair 8
p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, at the
Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield. (248) 661-1000.
