The creation of In the Beginning

as Abraham's wife, Sarah; David
Warner as his chief servant, Eliezer;
Billy Campbell as Moses; Geraldine
Chaplin as Yocheved; Alan Bates as
Jethro; and Diana Rigg as Rebecca,
among others - took considerably
longer than a six-day shoot in the
desert. But Landau was in no mood
for an early exodus from the set.
He enjoyed himself, getting to
know his character on a first-name
basis. And it was so easy to search
the high heavens for inspiration
because the heavens did indeed seem
higher than usual, adding some
celestial seasoning to the set.

how big the heavens are," says
Landau of his Moroccan memories.
In moving heaven and earth to the
desert, In the Beginning is a visual
dessert for viewers. But Morocco
provides more than a backdrop for a
biblical drama; it limns a landscape
of the soul, too.
And for the actor, playing
Abraham as father figure figured
much into his pondering the por-
trayal. To play him, "I made a large
commitment physically, spiritually
and emotionally," says Landau.
As viewers can see beginning
Sunday, it was a sacrifice well worth
the effort.

The four brothers share
anecdotes about their par-

The grandson, a preteen
when his grandfather died,
remembers Hy as a hand-
some man with a stubbly
beard who smelled of cigar
smoke. The sons remember
a hard-working man who
rose at 4 a.m., never raised
his voice and had the softest
hands from handling all of
that beef fat.

has become a well-known and respect-
ed name in the Detroit community.

Ronnie and his wife live in Franklin.
Robert, trained as an industrial engi-
neer, also went into the life insurance
business. He lives in Bloomfield Hills.
