from the community for these impor-

ceded that it's hard for interest groups
to have an impact in frantic, last-

"It's frustrating, because with this
kind of lawmaking, the decisions are
all made by five people behind closed
doors," he said.

equipped with everything you need.

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial
Museum is about to enter uncharted
territory as it tries to alert the nation
and the world to the nightmare in
Sudan — which the institution's
Committee on Conscience has
deemed a "genocide warning" situa-
tion.
Next week, the museum will spon-
sor a panel discussion on the situation
and unveil a special display on the
African country, where more than 2
million have already died, with anoth-
er 4-5 million driven from their
homes in violence directed by the gov-
ernment in the north against minori-
ties in the south.
The genocide warning was triggered,
museum officials said, because of the
strong likelihood the Sudanese govern-
ment is preparing to once again use
mass starvation as a tactic in its quest
to wrest oil-producing land from the
people living on it.
"It's very rare that we give over space
in the museum for contemporary
events," said Jerry Fowler, staff director
of the Committee on Conscience. "But
there is a real challenge to inject a
sense of urgency, and to do it on a sus-
tained basis." The museum, he said, is
planning a series of events for at least
the next nine months — to include
discussions about the situation with
the new Congress and administration.
The committee was created by the
U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council to
"alert the national conscience, influ-
ence policymakers, and stimulate
worldwide action to confront and
work to halt acts of genocide or relat-
ed crimes against humanity." The
series of events on Sudan, Fowler said,
means that we are really starting to
act on that vision." ❑

There is no endowment fee, and the
