orees and other JHAS volunteers, say- ing, "I marvel at the rapid growth of the organization and its major contri- bution to the community. "It's a blessing to take care of the , frail and elderly." Current JHAS President Mitch Kantor said it was "an honor to follow in the footsteps" of his 17 predecessors. Margot Parr, executive director of JHAS, called the past presidents and other volunteers "the heart of the Jewish Home and Aging Services orga- nization." Hannah Moss, co-chair of the tribute dinner with Larry Slutsky, said the past presidents "laid the groundwork for the JHAS as we know it today, and they deserved to be recognized." She announced that S130,000 has been raised to start a special Past Presidents Endowment Fund, to be used to enhance current JHAS facili- ties. The funds also will help aug- ment the celebration of holidays and festivals by the more than 2,000 elderly residents served by JHAS, bringing them cultural programs, holiday meals and other services. JHAS Auxiliary President Geri Margolis, who had the idea for this special evening, paid tribute to the past presidents. She summoned each hon- oree to a seat on the dais to receive the gift of a specially inscribed tzedakah box, shaped like a house. Family mem- bers of the six deceased presidents also were recognized: Jacob Levin, Myron Keyes, Gus Newman, Edward Fleischman, Jack Lefton and Milton Mahler. The 11 living past presidents are David M. Miro, Herbert Aronsson, Marvin Fleischman (Edward's son), Robert Steinberg, Paul Borman, Daniel Clark, David Hermelin, Jack Schon, Robert Naftaly, Janice Shatzman and Dan Guyer. Nine of the 11 were at the tribute. Doreen Hermelin accepted the honor for her husband, who was unable to attend because of health reasons. Larry Berry, president of Shaarey Zedek, accepted on behalf of Miro, 91, a Shaarey Zedek past president, who lives in Palm Beach, Fla. Marvin Fleischman, speaking for the honorees, said the tribute evening was "full of nostalgia, memories, seeing old friends and a reminder of the vol- unteers' commitment to "All of the past presidents have a common dream — to make sure the JHAS continues to care for the frail and elderly with dignity."
