Brevity was the order of the evening
for those who were honored and those
who did the hon-
oring at the first-
ever tribute din-
ner for the living
past presidents of
the Jewish Home
and Aging
Services (JHAS)
NOV. 1 at
Congregation
Shaarey Zedek in Sen. Carl Levin
Southfield.
The remarks
by U.S. Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.),
the official tribute speaker, on down
through the ranks of others on the
program, were relatively brief, but they
reached a consensus and were very
much to the point: That the past presi-
dents had served with distinction and
given a lot of time and energy to help
make JHAS a successful organization.
Portraits of the 11 living past presi-
dents, plus the six deceased presidents,
were displayed in the Shaarey Zedek
lobby and on a huge honor scroll con-
taining the names of JHAS donors.
Facsimiles of the scroll were given to
each of the 325 people attending the
dinner.
The premiere of a 15-minute, high-
quality video set the tone for the
evening. The video reflected the trib-
ute dinner's theme of "Remembering,
the Past, Looking to the Future," giv-
ing an overview of the organization's
93-year history of caring for the Jewish
elderly in metro Detroit. That history
starts with the Jewish Old Folks Home
at the old Beth Jacob Synagogue on
Detroit's Hastings Street and culmi-
nates -in the opening of the Fleischman
Residence/Blumberg Plaza on the
Applebaum Jewish Community
Campus in West Bloomfield.
Financed anonymously, the video
also portrays the JHAS's current opera-
tions and programs. West Bloomfield-
based Victor/Harder Productions Inc.
made the video.
Levin praised the video as a "wel-
come change from all of the election
campaign videos we've been seeing on
television." He also lauded the hon-
