Golden, opened his first office in 1946, he was a pio- neer in contact lenses. In fact, he sold nothing else. With Mrs. Golden's help, her husband's business became the Detroit Optometric Centers, which grew from its down- town Detroit office in the First National Building into today's "D.O.C" — a chain of more than 100 optical stores in six states. In the mid-1960s, the company began selling Norma conventional eyeglasses as well as contacts. Designer frames were first marketed 10 years later, and Mrs. Golden became the company's buyer for the higher-end eyewear. "It was her eye and her influence that really gave us the fashion edge," said son Richard S. Golden, current D.O.0 president and CEO. Mrs. Golden, a West Bloomfield resident, died Nov. 2 at age 83. In 1995, she battled against both breast and uterine cancer. A recur- rence of uterine cancer last month caused her death. D.O.0 has been active in breast cancer awareness, sponsoring the "Yes Mamm" program in October that promotes early detection and brings mobile mammography units from the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute to D.O.0 mall locations. Mrs. Golden was known for her fashion flair — she once appeared on a local newspaper's "10 Best- Dressed" list. "When my mother walked into the room, she had a starlet quality about her," said her son. "She was very tall, with big blonde hair, designer suits always colorful and beautifully tai- lored." When designer frames were first marketed in the 1960s, Mrs. Golden dealt with the frame manu- facturers and traveled to shows, occasionally in Europe, to look at new styles. "She sought out the best lines and made sure that we had them first," said Richard Golden. She continued her purchasing role for nearly 20 years. Mrs. Golden also kept an eye on the business end. As her husband remembers, "She had a very good sense of merchan- dising, how to sell to customers. She would always see if employees were doing the right thing — if they were talking to the people properly. "We had a won- Golden derful life together," he added. "We were married 61 years. We were together all the time." Richard Golden's wife, Shelley Golden, was very close to her mother-in-law. "Her soul and her spirit were so incredibly young," she said. "Norma just embraced life. Being with her was like being with a girlfriend my age. When we were together, we could giggle like two little schoolgirls. "She had an incredible zest for life. To her, life was truly a celebra- tion." Norma Golden is survived by her husband, Dr. Donald L. Golden; sons and daughters-in-law Michael "Mickey" Golden of West Bloomfield, Richard and Shelley Golden of Bloomfield Hills, Randal and Susan Golden of Orchard Lake and grandchildren Bradley Golden, Aaron Dillon, Seth Golden, Jessica Golden, Jaclyn Golden, Jaynee Golden and Jenna Golden. Interment was at Beth El Memorial Park.
