tors to Southfield-Lathrup High School
said they were amazed at the size of
everything in America, from the schools
to the cars. In Israel, they said fewer
people have their own cars; travel by bus
and taxi is more common. Apartments
outnumber the freestanding houses.
The students, who stayed with fami-
lies from Young Israel of Southfield,
were in town during the final days of
Sukkot, as well as Shemini Atzeret and
Simchat Torah.
In addition to Southfield-Lathrup,

the Israelis visited eight other high
schools, including the Jewish Academy
of Metropolitan Detroit in West
Bloomfield, Yeshivat Akiva in Southfield
and East Detroit High School in
Eastpointe. At East Detroit High, media
specialist Esther Sherizen of Oak Park
said the Children of the Dream pro-
gram is very successful because "it
broadens the knowledge and experi-
ences of all involved."
The teenagers also participated in
activities with the B'nai B'rith Youth
Organization, attending the
group's fall conclave at Camp
—rMaas in Ortonville. They also
2, visited with five synagogue
youth groups, including the
National Conference of
Synagogue Youth. The itiner-
ary included the Museum of
3 African American History and
radio station WJR, both in
Detroit.
When asked by the
Southfield-Lathrup students,
Maru Gete, 17, said he most
enjoyed staying with the host
families and going bowling.
Southfield-Lathrup freshman
Ruth MacNeille, a member of
Adat Shalom Synagogue in
Farmington Hills,
asked if the Ethiopian
Jews celebrated holi-
days and Shabbat the
same as their American
hosts.
"Some of the food
is different; songs are
more in Amharic than
Hebrew," Gete said.
"Basically, it's the same
idea."
The current vio-
lence in Israel is a nag-
ging threat to
Melkamu Yaacov, 34,
the trip's chaperone.
Yaacov, educational
supervisor in the rural
education department of the country's
Ministry of Education, told the class
that all of Israel is only 600-700 miles
north to south and 85 miles east to
west.
"We live in Israel in a bad situation,"
he said. Security is less of a concern dur-
ing the daylight hours, when the kids go
to their schools. "But at night, you go
directly to your home. Sometimes I
can't sleep. I worry about the country at
night."
Anxious to return, he said, "I am
married and I have a 3-year-old daugh-
ter. At night, my daughter is sleeping
with my photograph." ❑
