activists cut into her Jewish totals, but
she did better than expected among
other segments of the electorate.
In Michigan, Sen. Spencer
Abraham, a Republican and the only
Arab-American member of the Senate,
was narrowly defeated by Rep. Debbie
Stabenow, a Democrat.
Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.), a member
of the Jewish delegation in the Senate,
didn't even break a sweat in winning a
third term.
In California, Sen. Dianne Feinstein,
a Democrat, swept to victory over Rep.
Tom Campbell, a Republican and one
of Israel's major critics in the House.
Feinstein, who was on Al Gore's vice-
presidential short list this summer, is a
stronc, advocate for more effective gun
control.
The election in Missouri took on a
poignant twist when Sen. John
Ashcroft, a Republican and one of the
most conservative members of the
Senate, was defeated by a dead man
Gov. Mel Carnahan, who perished
in a plane crash last month.
The new governor indicated he will
appoint Carnahan's widow, Jean, to
the seat if the late candidate won.
Ashcroft was a mixed bag for Jewish
groups. He was a leading advocate of
charitable choice programs, which
make it easier for religious groups to
get federal money to provide health
and social services. That made him
popular with Orthodox groups.
But Jewish groups that focus on
church-state issues often found them-
selves battling various Ashcroft proposals.
There were two major ballot initia-
tives on school vouchers, another
source of conflict within the Jewish
community.
Both — in Michigan and California
— failed by substantial margins, a
major setback for supporters of various
plans to help the parents of private
and parochial school students.
"It's definitely a setback," said the
OU's Nathan Diament. "But it wasn't
unexpected. Opponents of vouchers
have engaged in scare tactics — and it
worked."

Gore with or without the vice presi-
dent's Jewish running mate, Joseph
Lieberman.
In fact, Nadiv is convinced that
Lieberman would be faced with con-
flicting loyalties because his decisions
would have to be based on the U.S.
Constitution and not on his values as
an Orthodox Jew.
