Special to the Jewish News

E

ntertainer Hal Linden has
used his multifaceted talents
to star in the popular televi-
sion sitcom Barney Miller, win
three TV Emmy Awards, a Tony Award
on Broadway and a broadcast industry
Peabody Award; and appear in many
movies and concerts.
Now Linden is applying his talents on
behalf of the Jewish National Fund, one
of the world's oldest Jewish charities.
While he continues his 55-year show
business career, Linden is serving as the
unpaid national spokesman for the JNF,
helping to preserve the organization's
reputation as "the caretaker of the land of
Israel on behalf of its owners, Jewish peo-
ple everywhere."
Linden, who describes himself as "just
a song-and-dance man," was in the
Detroit area on Oct. 26 to aid in the
JNF's awareness and Rind-raising efforts
and also to publicize the organization's
move from its long-time office in
Southfield. The JNF is now located in
Bloomfield Township in the Max M.
Fisher Federation Building, headquarters
of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit.
Mixing show business with charity
pleasure on this visit, Linden appeared
with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra in
concerts at Sturgis, Mich., then Toledo.
His older brother, Bernard, music profes-
sor at Bowling Green (Ohio) State
University, is a violist with the Toledo
orchestra. An avid golfer, Linden also
found time to play a round at the
Wabeek Golf Club in Bloomfield Hills
with Dr. William Ross of Bloomfield
Hills and Robert Schwartz, local JNF
president, plus Linden's wife, Frances,
who travels with him on the
concert/JNF circuit.

`to -Atte-

"I shot a 92 . . . not too bad . . . it's a
difficult course, but very beautiful," he
mused, relaxing over a late lunch at
Birmingham's Townsend Hotel.

Right Thing To Do

In this an age of $20-million-per-film
movie stars, rock music performers who
make millions per concert and athletes
who get multi-million-dollar signing
bonuses, Linden was reminded that it is
unusual for a celebrity to offer free ser-
vices for anything on a sustaining basis.
But to him, charity work is the right
thing for entertainers to do, especially for
a cause so worthy as the JNF.
"Entertainers often become affiliated
with a charity dinner or a golf outing,
and I've done a lot of benefits myself,"
Linden explained. "I was chairman of
the national March of Dimes campaign
for several years. But I guess it is unusual
in the industry to be committed to one
cause for a long period of time."
Linden is featured in hard-hitting
advertisements in newspapers and maga-
zines, showing him and his grandson,
Charlie, putting a coin in the famous
JNF "little blue box." The ad's headline
says: "Your Parents Planted Trees-in
Israel. Now It's up to You to Give Them
Water." This refers to the fact that Israel
is suffering its worst drought in 80 years,
and a dwindling water supply threatens
trees, farming, housing, immigration and
the peace process itself
The JNF has taken on the water
shortage as one of its highest priorities,
seeking about $1 million monthly in
donations to solve the problem. The
agency is building reservoirs and dams
and recycling wastewater for farming and
toilet use. The JNF also is supporting the
Israeli government's plan to construct a
$100 million desalinization plant to pro-
duce clean water.
