he parking lot at Hillel Day School of
Metropolitan Detroit was overflowing
on Oct. 19, as the school hosted its
annual "Special Persons Day."
Students in kindergarten through grade four
at the Farmington Hills school brought some-
one near and dear to them to share a morning
full of regular classroom activities and special
events.
"I'm having the best time," said Debbie
Altman of Bloomfield Hills, as she helped her
grandson Sawyer Altman, 5, of Birmingham,
make a tzedakah box. "We sent all three of our
children to Hillel. We have eight grandchildren
and they'll be going here, too."
Among the other special friends was Arnold
Troostwijk of Switzerland. Originally from
Holland, Troostwijk and his wife, Mirjam, visit
their daughter and her family in Huntington
Woods every year. This is the first year the visit
included a stop at Hillel, where their oldest
