"IF YOU'RE GOING TO BE THINKING ANYTHING,

YOU MIGHT AS WELL BE THINKING BIG."

THIS NEW YEAR'S EVE, SOMETHING BIG AWAITS YOU AT THE TOWNSEND HOTEL:

Israel concert is Davis' first experi-
ence planning a program around
Jewish composers, although he has
planned other events around various
themes.
"I think the violin is a particularly
favored instrument for Jewish people,"
says Davis, whose own Jewish heritage
comes from Polish ancestry through
his father. "Many of the world's great-
est violinists have been Jewish, and
there seems to be a natural affinity for
the instrument. I think 70 years ago or
so the violin was favored because it
was easily portable and cost rather lit-
tle money.
Davis, born in England, began
playing the violin when he was 3.
His parents bought him the instru-
ment because they noticed the
unusual intensity with which he lis-
tened to violinists on the radio.
"I started to give concerts when I
was 6," recalls Davis, who has per-
formed at the Detroit Institute of
Arts and in Ann Arbor. "I never real-
ly, thought seriously about any other
type of career than being a per-
former. My, idol was Yehudi
Menuhin, and I eventually did a lot
of concerts with him.
"I came to the United States in
1959 to give a recital in New York
and decided to stay. I've divided my
time going back and forth to Europe
so that I could play there."
Davis, divorced with a grown son
who works with computers, rounds
out his musical interests by making
recordings. Contracting with differ-
ent labels, he says his most recent
and still untitled CD will be released
in December. It will feature seven
fantasy pieces by a Viennese compos-
e r.
"My recordings are principally
music of the 20th century," Davis
says.
