machine. Then there's the jumbo
cooler of ice cream novelties and
gallons of vanilla for the hummers.
By 7 a.m. Jaffe is long gone with
two assistants in tow to meet
Lester, who's already reserved the
famous space on the hill in the
Victors parking lot. This corner, for
those who know the turf, is near
the tunnel and the big steps going
into Section 1. For nearly a
decade, Jaffe and Lester have
been kings of this hill.
Lester arrives with his gourmet
goodies in tow. Among today's
offerings are a cold tomato dill
soup and a vegetarian pasta salad
prepared by his daughter.
Hours before game time, revel-
ers begin to arrive at this private
party. A half-dozen or so tents —
carpeted in blue astro-turf -include
a maze of banquet tables.
Everything is labeled. Iced tea,
decaf coffee, regular coffee —
everything. It's an organized sys-
tem.
With few exceptions, Jaffe has
tailgated since he was 6 years old.
His father would buy some deli
sandwiches and take him to the
games. He started taking his own
children to the games when his
oldest was 3.
Some of these guests have been
coming to this event for decades.
Jaffe explains it's been really big
for the last 15 years. And they
come from far and wide — across
state borders and as far away as
Colorado for this particular tail-
gate.
The tailgate ends when the
game ends. The Jaffe and Lester
tailgate has achieved legendary
proportions. Guests lucky enough
to be included on the long list can
only wax on their experiences.
And so a legend is made: Go-Blue!
