Can There Be
A Real Peace?

A simply unique

collection of
Fall/Winter
coats...

For more than two generations, every
Palestinian Arab has been brought up
to hate the Jews of Israel.
It should be clear to all by now that
there is no chance of any real peace —
the very existence of Israel is not
acceptable to them ("Shocks And
Aftershocks," Oct. 13, page 6).
It is not a question of any section
or area — Israel must be destroyed, in
the eyes of its enemies. Add to that a
proclivity to violence among the area's
Arabs, reinforced by the advocacy of
their religious fundamentalists.
It is not surprising that any small
thing is an occasion for violence.
There will never be an opportunity for
[achieving] real peace until an entire
generation has grown up without
being educated to hate.
PalestiMan Authority leader Yasser
Arafat's on-and-off engagement in
negotiations was only an attempt to get
into better position for resumption of
war. Truce is now the best to hope for.

allied with Israel in defending their

the crime of being allied with Israel.
Many others have been killed. These
individuals are mostly Christian Arabs
and Shi'ite Muslims.
The Hezbollah is controlled by
Iran. The militia of Amal and the
[Lebanese] Druse militia are con-
trolled by Syria. Syria, currently, has
40,000 troops in Lebanon. The Syrian
government picks the Lebanese
ambassadors to foreign countries as
well as the textbooks in Lebanese
schools. Lebanon is not an indepen-
dent country, but a province of Syria.
By giving $253 million to southern
Lebanon, we are, in effect, subsidizing
the terrorist state of Syria and the
Hezbollah terrorists, who are allied
with Iran.
The record of U.S. agencies, such
as the Agency for International Devel-
opment, in controlling our money
overseas and seeing that it is spent for
the purpose that Congress has desig-
nated, is notoriously bad.

In a recent article ("Friends Of Our
Foes," Sept. 22, page 39), U.S. Sen.
Spencer Abraham was listed as one of
the favorite senators of an anti-Israel,
pro-Arab lobbying magazine. This is
because of his voting record, especially
on issues where the U.S. Senate asked
Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser
Arafat to refrain from anti-Semitic
propaganda in textbooks and in the
Palestinian media.
Sen. Abraham was also one of only
four senators who refused to sign a let-
ter to President Bill Clinton com-
mending the Israelis for their restraint
and asking Chairman Arafat to con-
trol the recent violence.
Sen. Abraham and U.S. Rep. Joe
Knollenberg (R-11th District) have
joined to sponsor a bill that would
increase U.S. aid to southern Lebanon
from $3 million to $253 million to
"rebuild the infrastructure and hospi-
tals in southern Lebanon." Southern
„ Lebanon is currently controlled by
Hezbollah terrorists. The Lebanese
government has stated that it will not
send their troops into southern
Lebanon to take control.

Spirituality
As Support

Whether your readers were propo-
nents or opponents of the peace talks
and concessions offered by Israeli
Prime Minister Ehud Barak is now
largely irrelevant. It is now necessary
to take united action to strengthen
Israel for the tough times ahead.
Newspaper articles, rallies and
speeches are nice ("United We Stand,"
Oct. 20, page 6), but they are not the
proper action that we Jews can take.
On Kol Nidrei, Rabbi Eli Jundef of
Ohel Moed Shomrey Emunah in West
Bloomfield reminded us that the sages
taught that the world sits on a scale of
merits and demerits and that we, as
individuals, by performing mitzvot,
can tip the scale to help Israel.
During Sukkot, Rabbi Elimelech
Silberberg of Sara Tugman Bais
Chabad Torah Center of West Bloom-
field told his congregation that Jews in
America should view themselves as
part of the Israeli Defense Forces.
There are front-line soldiers, generals,
reserves and we, in America, behind
the front lines, giving support to Israel
by performing mitzvot.
The message of these two rabbis
is a message of Judaism. Everything
that we, as Jews, do has an effect on
the world. If we truly desire to help
