probably most famous for the New
York race track that bears his name,
served 10 years as chairman of the
:Democratic National Committee.

12. During the 1950s and 1960s,
Robert Briscoe (1894-1969) was
Dublin's Lord Mayor. For more than
40 years, Briscoe was a member o
the Irish Parliament.

13. Ernest H. Gruening (1887-
1974) was one of the leading fig-
. ures in the fight for Alaskan state-
. hood. Born in New York City, Gruen-
ing was a physician and journalist.
He served as editor of Notion maga-
zine from 1920-1923, before mov-
ing to Alaska. A Democrat, Gruening
was named territorial governor of
Alaska in 1939, then became one of
the state's first iwo senators.

Kissinger was 15 when his family
came to the United States, settling in
New York. His first job was working
as a delivery boy for a shaving-
brush factory.

15. Mordecai Manuel Noah

(1785-1851) served as American
consul to Tunis and published several
controversial newspapers. For many
years, Noah advocated the creation
of a Jewish colony in Grand Island
(near Buffalo), N.Y. In 1820, Noah
actually tried to buy the property
specifically for the proposed colony.
This unfulfilled dream was one of
his many disappointments (another
being then Secretary of State James
Monroe's decision to dismiss him
as consul to Tunis, because Noah
hadn't informed the government
that he was Jewish).
While Noah's dream of a Jewish
region in New York never material-
ized, you can still see a large sand-
stone at Grand Island that
reads: "... A City of Refuge for
the Jews/Founded by Mordecai
Manuel Noah/in the month of
Tizri (September) 1 825/& in the
Fiftieth Year of American Inde-
pendence."

16. The first elected Jewish gover-
nor in the United States was
Moses Alexander (1853-1932).
Born in Germany, Alexander set-
tled in Idaho, where he was elect-
ed mayor of Boise before becom-
ing governor of the state. The
town of Alexander, Idaho, is
named in his memory.

Henry Kissinger

14. Henry Kissinger (b. 1923), the
U.S. secretary of state under Presi-
dent Richard M. Nixon, was raised
in the Bavarian town of Fuerth.
VVhen the Nazis took over, Henry
(then known as Heinz) and his broth-
er were kicked out of a state school,
and their father was dismissed from
his teaching position.

17. Lord Barnett Janner (1892-

1982), popularly known as "Bar-
i ney" Janner, served in the British
House of Parliament for both the
i Labour and Liberal parties (not at the
I same time). An outspoken supporter
of Zionism and Jewish rights, he was
knighted in 1965. His son, Greville,
took over his seat in Parliament when
Janner retired.
