For the past 24 years, Falls dedicat-
ed himself to the Oakland County
Special Olympics, a competition for
people with disabilities. He left the
organization a month ago over a poli-
cy dispute with the statewide organi-
zation.
"The Special Olympics was really
the second love of my life," he said.
"We did it every day. We built a staff
of 450 volunteers and a management
team of 12 people and left $900,000
in the bank. We took it from
nowhere to everywhere. It breaks my
heart to have to give it up."
Falls considers the Michigan
Jewish Sports Hall of Fame special
because it recognizes people below
the level of celebrity. "It recognizes
people who do good things at differ-
ent levels in life," he said.
"This is meaningful to me," he
added, otherwise "I wouldn't have
been covering high school sports for
all these years. I do it because I love
it. I love the kids, I love the coaches, I
love the games, I love the towns and I
love the teams."
Falls was inducted into the
Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in
May. "Look how lucky I am," he said.
"I've had the opportunity to do what
I wanted to do, and write what I
wanted to write."
