with certified Angus Beef served on all
cuts of meat ... It was the premier art-
deco decor restaurant in Detroit ... with
glass blocks, pink and metal accents,
servers in black slacks set off by white
suspenders at dusk and full tuxedos at
dinner ... striking etched-glass silhou-
ettes of 1920s ladies, Erte lithos on the
walls and smoked mirrors.
There's none of these at Longshots
Bar & Grill ... Not even valet service
like at Vargo's or 1940 Chop House ...
But it does have a lot of well-lit park-
ing for about 90 cars in Don's own lot
across the street.
The locale was formerly Driftwood
Lounge from 1955 to 1985, where
rocker Bob Seeger performed before
reaching fame.
Don advises folks to stay away on
Friday nights ... Says it's too noisy and
crowded ... Saturday evenings are
excellent, he says ... but call ahead and
make a reservation with Don or
Hillary Brown, his general manager
who also cooks with Don ... or wife,
Francheska Vargo, always there with
him, plus running the bar.
You can hardly beat the hamburger
now served by Don ... About 500
chopped sirloins a week ... $3 ... with
no extra charge for cheeseburgers ...
(Chopped sirloin that is 93 percent
meat and just 7 percent fat.)
Amazing? ... So is Don ... He's back
in action again ... without the frills of
yesteryears ... But with much of the
same fine food that he has always been
proud to serve.
TWO NEW GREEK restaurants
opening in Novi and Ann Arbor, will
both be named Old Parthenon ...
They'll be owned by Andy Stylianou,
son-in-law of Tommy Peristeris, Big
Daddy's co-owner, and his son, Paul
Peristeris, former University of
Michigan punter ... Also David and
Gary Abbo.
The Novi Old Parthenon, Grand
River and Novi Road, former site of
Oxford Inn, will open around the
third week in November ... The Ann
Arbor Old Parthenon, Washington
and Forest, former locale of Metzger's,
will open around the latter part of
November or early December.
CONGRATS ... to Eileen and
Marvin Goldman, on their 50th
anniversary .. celebrated with a
brunch at Fusion by children, Steven
and Barbara Goldman and Julie and
John Farr ... Guest list included
Eileen's sister and former brides-
maid, Betty Nederlander; and
Marvin's brother and former best
man, Bob Goldman.
