Goldsmith is former host of that
station's classical music program Performance
Today. He has also been an actor. Layer this
year, he will become director of the classical
music channel on the satellite music station
XM, which will enable listeners to receive a
strong signal from coast to coast.
The second of two sons, he spent most of his
childhood in Cleveland, where he had many
Jewish friends. "But I did not think of myself
as a Jew then, because I was not raised that
way," he said. "I attended my first seder in
Cleveland when I was 16 or 17."
Completing this book and learning about
his family has strengthened his Jewish roots,
he said.
As far as a belief in God, I'm not sure what
I think. I agree with Horatio when he says to
Hamlet, 'There are more things in heaven and
earth than are dreamt of in your philosophies.

But exactly what I believe, where this con-
cept of God is, I'm not sure at the moment. But
certainly what's called 'culturally,' I'm a Jew."
The Inextinguishable Symphony startles the
reader with a sense of excitement usually
reserved for fiction. Look for the bucolic
scenes of the youn , couple as they first fall in
love. Contrast that lush writing with the spare
style in which George Goldsmith recounts the
death of his father and brother after nearly
two years in a French internment camp.
The book's climax depicts Martin Goldsmith
and his brother, Peter, in Germany, marching
with the citizens of Oldenburg as they do their
annual penance for Kristallnacht.
