show the article to his agent. I sent a
copy, and 72 hours later, I got a
phone call. She said she had an edi-
tor interested in an informal history
on gays and lesbians in Hollywood."
Although Ehrenstein was brought
up as a Catholic, a faith no longer
practiced, he had a Jewish father and
connections to Jewish traditions
through his extended family and
friends.
In keeping with his-background,
Ehrenstein is impressed with a new
film, Paragraph 175, a documentary
about the treatment of German
homosexuals during the Holocaust.
It will be released throughout the
rest of the year in movie theaters and
will be shown on HBO in the
spring. The film's co-producer
Howard Rosenman, described as
Jewish and gay by Ehrenstein, is dis-
cussed in the book.
"I don't think that anybody can
produce the absolute truth about
anyone," Ehrenstein explains about
the people he mentions. "The per-
fect example is Rock Hudson. I
knew a lot about him from every-
thing I read over the years, but when
I got into the book and started deal-
ing with all these things and talking
to people, the more mysterious he
became. I don't really understand
him at all."
Ehrenstein currently is mulling
over some ideas he has for other
books about the gay experience, par-
ticularly in the recent
past. He also is writing
a very long piece about
a French film, Those
Who Love Me Can Take
the Train, which shows
the way people deal
with death and has
many gay characters.
"People must tell their
stories," Ehrenstein says.
"They must stand up
and speak. The more
you are able to speak
about what you've
known and what you've
felt, the easier it is for
you to connect with
people." ❑
