A New Approach to Creativity

Israel, in addition to supporting
Israel financially, we must undertake
the action that has ensured Jewish
continuity.
Each one of us, whatever our
level of observance or affiliation, can
perform mitzvot: giving tzedakah,
acts of kindness, honoring our par-
ents, saying the Shema, lighting
Shabbat candles, putting on tefillin,
or others. We have it in our power
to help tip the scale in the balance
toward Israel.
In addition, why not have an
international Torah/Jewish knowl-
edge day or prayer day to upgrade
our spirituality in support of Israel?
Torah study has been a traditional
way for the Jewish people to seek
Divine intervention or prevent a dis-
aster from striking the Jewish people.
We all know the story of Purim
and that Mordechai and the Jews in
Persia prayed after learning of
Haman's evil decree. A day set aside
as a learning day or prayer day for
Jews all over the world is an action
in which everyone supporting Israel
can participate and show our soli-
darity. In Kohellet, read in syna-
gogues on Shemini Atzeret, King
Solomon told us that a three-ply
cord is harder to break than a single
stand. This is the time for all Jews
to put aside their differences and
gain immeasurable strength by com-
ing together and acting as one.

Sound Off
On Shofar

I was amused by Robert Sklar's article
("Shofar On Shabbat," Oct. 20, page
24) about an exchange between Rabbi
Joseph Klein and a visitor ro his Tem-
ple Emanu-El in Oak Park this past
Rosh Hashanah.
This year, the visitor attended ser-
vices at Rabbi Klein's Reform temple
and was shocked to find that they
sounded the shofar on Rosh
Hashanah. even though it was the
Sabbath!
The stranger was dismayed that the
Reform temple committed such a sac-
rilege because he knows that the
soundina of the shofar is forbidden on
the Sabbath,
b
"which takes precedence
over all holidays." His chagrin was
conveyed to the rabbi in a letter.
Rabbi Klein responded by explain-
ing that the Reform temple observes
only one day of Rosh Hashanah, and

if they didn't sound the shofar on the
Sabbath, his congregation would miss
the shofar blowing altogether, and
that wouldn't be right. Besides, Rabbi
Klein explained, the whole reason for
the celebration of the Jewish New Year
on two days is that in ancient times,
Jews living outside of Jerusalem
weren't certain when the festival began
due to "vagaries of the lunar calen-

dar." In other words, they were uncer-
tain which day was the first of Tishrei
(Rosh Hashanah), so they made the
holiday a two-day celebration "so they
would least get one day right." Today,
with astronomically accurate calen-
dars, "the need for the second day is
eliminated," according to Rabbi
Klein.
"Neither the Reform movement
nor the Torah recognizes the second
day of the holiday," Rabbi Klein con-
cludes. It's charming that Rabbi Klein
embraces the Torah as his partner in
this conclusion.
The fact of the matter is that the
second day of Rosh Hashanah has
nothing to do with sightings of the
moon, and the two-day celebration
was ordained specifically because the
first day of Rosh Hashanah often falls
on the Sabbath, and it is forbidden to
sound the shofar on the Sabbath
(Mishna Brurah "Laws of Rosh
Hashanah" 601b). Consequently,
when the first day of Rosh Hashanah
falls on the Sabbath, we sound the
shofar on the second day of the holi-
day, even in Jerusalem, and the second
day of Rosh Hashanah is not a yom
toy sheni shel galuyot (a second-day cel-
ebration of the lands in the diaspora).
Furthermore, Rabbi Klein's pro-
nouncement that "Reform already
allows for travel, electricity, and other
acts of labor" makes it clear that the
Reform movement and the Torah are
certainly odd bedfellows, when it comes
to the sanctity of
Hashanah.
