study programs for students.
"MSU hated to make the decision,"
he says of the cancellation of the Jan.
2001 semester in Israel. A variety of
sources influenced the decision, but
parental concern was not a factor. Two
of the three students there this semester
have chosen to remain.

Solidarity Travel

"The United Jewish Communities, as
well as other major Jewish organizations,
believe that it's important to send soli-
darity missions over to Israel," UJC
spokesperson Glenn Rosenkrantz says in
an official statement. "Not only to gath-
er facts and make contacts with officials
and Israelis, but also to highlight the fact
that American and World Jewry stands
with the Israeli government and the
Israeli people at this time in particular."
"This trip was planned because of the
conflict, not in spite of it — to show
solidarity," says Gad-Harf of the trip
that is scheduled to leave Sunday, Nov.
4, with Detroiters Mark Davidoff,
Michael Horowitz and Marta Rosenthal.
"This is definitely a time American
Jews and the Jews of Detroit need to
show support for Israel," says Federation's
Aronson. "A lot of us have connection
with Israelis — we know people there —
communicate with them.
"The best way is to physically be there,
and do what you can to change the per-
ception of the media in this country that
Israelis are the aggressors and going after
innocent women and children."
Rabbi Bitran had some fear about
traveling to Israel last month, but want-
ed to show support for the country.
"I was concerned about going to Israel
but feeling internally at peace," he says.
"I didn't tell my mother. I was going to
the right place at the right time."
