A MONTH-LONG CELEBRATION FRAMES THE WORK OF MORE THAN
400 LOCAL, NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS.
ewish photographers, collectors, themes and spaces are clicking into "Detroit Focus 2000: A Festival of Photography" filling the Detroit area with eye-catching
images throughout November. Any visit to a museum, gallery, university, restaurant or shopping mall is likely to present vintage and/or new pictures that show
the artistic possibilities offered through camera lenses and the ingenuity of the people behind them. Altogether, more than. 400 photo enthusiasts will have
their work divided among 100 venues, buttressed by lectures and workshops.
Louis Stettner, noted for his striking news photos done for Life, Time and other magazines, presents a retrospective at the Creative Arts Center in Pontiac. Margot and
Warren Coville, longtime collectors, are among the donors whose generosity has enhanced the exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Linda McCartney, who was raised in
a Jewish home and married Beatle Paul McCartney, is remembered after succumbing to cancer through her collection of rock star images and still Ides touring to
GalerieBlu/Uzelac Gallery in Pontiac. "The Pluralism Project at the University of Michigan-Dearborn" showcases pictures that depict religious diversity in the area and .
includes images of Russian Jews in activities at Congregation Beth Shalom in Oak Park. The photos are on display at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery in the Mardigian Library.
Among the participating artists are Todd Weinstein, exploring issues of Jewish spirituality; Elayne Gross, capturing wedding scenes; David Levin, catching some classic cars;
Jerome Magid, zeroing in on wait staff around the country; and Howard Schwartz, offering floral dose-ups at the Somerset Collection. "A Journey Through the History of
Photography With Monte Nagler, Artist and Collector" is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at the Janice Charach Epstein Gallery in the Jewish Community Center
in West Bloomfield. Nagler will illustrate his lecture with examples from his personal holdings, which include famous shots by Jewish photographers.
