Lectures Planned
Israeli scholar Dan Michman will
give two free lecnires on religious
Zionism and or he Holocaust
under the auspices of the Cohn-
Haddow Center for Judaic Studies
at Wayne State University.
On Wednesday Nov. 15, at 7:30
p.m., Professor Michman, depart-
ment of Jewish history at Bar-Ilan
University Ramat Gan, Israel, will
present a lecture titled "Religious
Zionism at the Crossroads: Past
Beliefs and Achievements, Present
Crises" at the Max M. Fisher
Federation Building, 6735
Telegraph Road, Bloomfield
Township.
Professor Michman will review
the history of religious Zionism
from its emergence in the 19th cen-
tury through its crucial role in the
development of the Jewish state in
the 20th century. The lecture will
conclude with a discussion of the
challenges facing religious Zionists
in the wake of the profound crises
and transformations in Israeli soci-
ety today. The presentation will be
followed by a light dessert recep-
tion.
A second lecture tided "When
Witnesses Are No More: The
Holocaust as History" will be held
on Thursday, Nov. 16, at 3 p.m. in
the Faculty/Administration Building
on Wayne's campus. Professor
Michman's lecture will examine
what it means for our understand-
ing of the Holocaust as the sur-
vivors, perpetrators and bystanders
pass away and as the Shoah is no
longer viewed as a recent event.
Professor Michman is the author
of six books and over 60 articles. He
serves as the chief historian at the
Yad Vashem International Institute
for Holocaust Research and chairs
Bar-Ilan University's Institute of
Holocaust Research and the
Institute for Research on Diaspora
Jewry in Modern Times. In addi-
tion, he holds the university's
Avraham and Eta Spiegel Chair in
Holocaust Research and its Rabbi
Brener Chair in the History of
European Jewry during the
Holocaust.
