esty and steadfastness?)
To this day, Russia is selling arms to
Iran only because Gore's secret pact gave
it the opportunity to do so. Some of
those arms undoubtedly find their way
from Iran to its surrogates in Israel.
What about Israel? What has this
administration done for Israel except
trying to get Clinton a Nobel Peace
Prize by appeasing [Palestinian
Authority Chair- man Yasser] Arafat
and the Palestinians? What "fresh
idea" will Gore bring but more
appeasement? What a wonderful result
appeasement has produced as Israeli
soldiers are lynched and mutilated.
Do you also like Gore because he is
an inveterate liar? The liberal media
choose to characterize his constant false-
hoods as "exaggerations" or "embellish-
ments." Why the euphemisms? A lie is a
lie. We can understand someone who
lies for gain. But to lie just to lie about
insignificant things is a dangerous per-
sonality disorder for a person who could
be our president.
Yet, you have endorsed Gore with
unseemly and unprofessional haste
and with a front cover we find to be
in extremely poor taste. Your
endorsement comes before the sec-
ond debate, before the New York
Times disclosure of his secret pact
with Russia and before the confla-
gration in Israel.
What was the hurry? We are sure
that other newspapers will endorse
Gore, but at least they are going to
wait until both candidates have had
their say and all material facts are in.

Words Taken
From Context

Has the so-called Republican Jewish
Coalition reached so low as to
besmirch an upright Jewish senator
running for vice president on the
Democratic ticket?
In a radio interview, some of Sen.
Joseph Lieberman's words were taken
out of context. In doing so, the Republi-
can Jewish Coalition wrote an open let-
ter to the Jewish community condemn-
ing him for allegedly admiring Nation
of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan.
Lieberman did not say he admired
Farrakhan; he said he admired the
man's efforts to register voters
("Lieberman Would Face Farrakhan,"
Oct. 13, page 31).

Our Elderly
Need Attention

Jay Korelitz, thank you for your heart-
warming, emotional article ("Caring
For Our Innocent Lambs," Oct. 13,
page 40).
In reference to Leah, the article
affected me and many dedicated
friends who are volunteers in our
community through Jewish Vocational
Service and who have visited nursing
and foster care homes in Livonia and
on Detroit's Woodward Avenue and
Chicago Boulevard.
Whether it is one Jewish client
among 100, or one among 20, it hurts
to see where our elderly people are sit-
uated. I cannot understand why our
giving Jewish community cannot help
our forgotten people.
Let us hope that, for the new year,
many of our people will be situated in
the tradition they were born in.

The Paper
Is Partisan

We carry a large selection of leather coats and jackets.

I am truly disappointed with your
decision to drop all pretense of
political impartiality by endorsing a
political candidate ("Al Gore For
President," Oct. 6, page 41) in one
edition and calling for the defeat of
the voucher proposal ("`No' On
Vouchers," Oct. 13, page 39) the
next week,
Although at least 70 percent of
the American Jewish people are
securely bound to the Democratic
Party and erroneously believe the
voucher plan would be detrimental
to the public schools, there are oth-
ers who are adamantly opposed to
the Jewish News resorting to political
partisanship.
If all Jews agreed with your politi-
cal choices, your editorial policy still
would be erroneous and totally con-
trary to objectivity. I urge you to
refrain from further support of any
political candidate or proposal.
As the late Philip Slomovitz wrote
more than half a century ago, "The
Jewish News has been created to
serve all of the Jewish community."
He scrupulously followed that
pledge. You would be wise to resume
that policy.
