The Bialy Eaters

A passion for bialys drew Sheraton to the
Polish town of Bialystok to explore the history
of the bread, Finding a place of desolation,
where turn-of-the-century massacres, fol-
lowed by the Holocaust had drastically
reduced the number of Jewish residents, she became a woman
on a mission, traveling around the world to rescue the stories of the
scattered Bialystokers. She tells of their once vibrant culture and its
cuisine, reviving the exiled memories of those who escaped with
only their recollections, and one very important recipe. Sheraton is
the former food critic for the New York Times and the author of 14
cookbooks.
