Strength on the Bench

SUPER SUNDAY FUND RAISING.

Each fund-raising session Sunday
will have time devoted to calling peo-
ple for new gifts, Zlotoff said. "Each
year, the Federation loses about 1,000
gifts, either from death or from people
moving. We want to replace them and
move ahead with a goal of 2,000 new
gifts this year."
Zlotoff isn't seeking a hard sell using
Israel's woes for Federation's gains.
"No one wants to ever look to a
tragic situation, and there being some
beneficial by-product," said Zlotoff,
who feels federations and the UJC
should stick to the original plan of
earmarking funds for relief, rescue and
renaissance.
"It's not a monetary crisis," he said.
"The good fortune is at least in Israel's
ability to defend itself. We're in a far
different state than we were 10, 15 or
20 years ago. There was a time we sent
money directly to Israel to help them
defend themselves. I don't think that
need is there any longer. That's won-
derful. It's allowing us to take our
resources and direct them elsewhere."
Federation President Penny
Blumenstein of Bloomfield Hills said,

IV hen Imma Sologub of
Southfield needs to go
to the doctor, the
Russian-born woman
who hardly speaks English normally
would have to find her own way on
public transportation. The trip
would entail finding the right bus,
walking to the bus stop and navigat-
ing the streets to the doctor's office.
Instead, the Jewish Family
Services' transportation system, sub-
sidized by the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, can pick her
up at her door, deliver her directly to
the doctor's office and provides her
with a translator to boot. Sologub is
only one of 18,500 people who will
use this service.
The shuttle service is one of a
myriad of Federation programs that

"We're a family and we have to stand
together in times of need. Israel isn't
our only issue, but on this particular
Super Sunday, it is one. You don't
want to take it our of proportion to
what the other needs are — both local
and overseas — but certainly, there are
needs in Israel."
The money does not go to the gov-
ernment or to the military, it goes to
social services as needed, she said, "and
Super Sunday will certainly bring this
out, because we'll be making calls on
behalf of the Jewish people wherever
they are."
Terran Leemis and Mark Diem,
both of Bloomfield Hills, are co-chairs
of this year's kickoff event. "Super
Sunday has always been a special time
in our community — and for me, per-
sonally," Leemis said.
"The volunteers who contribute
their time, the donors who contribute
their resources — all of them speak
volumes about what kind of a Jewish
community we are," she said.
Stephen Solender, the New York
City-based UJC president, said the

directly benefit Jews in need locally.
Lumped into the entire JFS alloca-
tion of nearly $1.7 million last year,
this transportation program has been
in existence for 10 years, said Karen
Fink, associate executive director of
JFS, with offices in Southfield and
West Bloomfield.
"It allows our elderly to age in
place. They want to grow old in
their own home and remain inde-
pendent," she said.
Most passengers pay between $5
and $8, depending on what they can
afford, but it would normally cost
about $20 a ride, not including the
translator.
We provide escorted transporta-
tion," she said. "The Southeast
Michigan Transportation Authority
won't. We take them right to where
they need to go. We'll walk them to
where they need to go. We'll get them a
wheelchair. We make a difference." Cl
