The 17th annual Midwest Labor Zionist
Alliance seminar will be hosted by Labor
Zionist Alliance on the weekend of Nov.
10-12 at DoubleTree Guest Suites in
Southfield. The focus is a discussion of
how to organize an Israeli "reverse mis-
sion."
Sandra Gross, seminar co-chair with
Barbara Zabitz, said the purpose of a
reverse mission, having local families
with specific interests/concerns host visi-
tors from Israel with the same
interests/concerns, is to re-establish a
connection between American Jews and
Israelis.
"Many American Jews no longer
identify with Zionism," said Zabitz.
They see Israel as a "westernized, afflu-
ent country, with needs that no longer
fit with the traditional Zionist goal of
aliyah [immigration to Israel].
Furthermore, they are confused by what
they see and hear about Israel, especially
the violence with the Palestinians. In any
case, they no longer see any reason to
identify themselves as Zionists."
Zabitz added, 'American Jews now
seem to believe that the goals of
Zionism have been achieved; however,
the vision of the founders remains
unfulfilled. Israel has not become a 'light
unto the nations.' Until that vision
becomes a reality, Zionists will have a
legitimate role, even without aliyah."
The seminar will concentrate on
steps that local organizations need to
take to produce a successful reverse mis-
sion. Michael Landsberg, executive
director of the World Labor Zionist
movement, will provide practical
insights into the implementation of a
reverse mission, based on his personal
experiences. Dr. Jacob Climo, professor
of anthropology at Michigan State
University, will make presentations
regarding cultural differences between
American and Israeli Jews.
In addition to Zabitz and Gross,
other organizers of the seminar include
Dr. Jeremy Salinger, president of Labor
Zionist Alliance of Metro Detroit; Bat-
Ami Abas, Habonim Dror and commu-
nity youth shlichah; and Helen and
Norman Naimark, Shlomo and Leah
Drachler, Dena and Irving Greenberg,
Bernie and Sara Schiff, Rita and Mel
Seidman, David and Ethel Silberg, and
Joel Waldbort.
Registration fee for the weekend is
5150; the hotel is additional. For infor-
mation, call the LZA office, (248) 967-
3170.
