Stabenow's positions are:
Abortion: I am pro-choice. The deci-
sion to have or not to have an abor-
tion is an intensely personal decision
to be made by a woman with her cler-
gy, doctor and family. I do oppose par-
tial-birth abortions with an exception
for the life or serious physical health
consequences of the mother.

Campaign Finance: I am a co-sponsor
of the House version of Sen. John
McCain's campaign finance-reform
bill. My opponent opposes the bill.
I've also voted to require greater dis-
closure
closure of unregulated "independent'
organizations.
Child Care: I have helped lead many
child care initiatives throughout my
years of public service. Most recently, I
have introduced legislation to increase
the Child and Dependent Care Tax
Credit for working families, and to
allow parents who stay at home to
take advantage of the Child and
Dependent Care Tax Credit.

Budget Surplus: With projected budg-
et surpluses, we must seize the once-
in-a-generation opportunity to pay
down the debt, extend the solvency of
Medicare and the Social Security Trust
Fund, add a much-needed voluntary
Medicare prescription drug benefit
and provide targeted middle class tax
relief.

Education Reform and School
Vouchers: I understand the deep con-
cerns that parents have about the qual-
ity of their children's education and
respect the right of parents to choose
either a public or private school for
their children. However, I do not sup-
port Michigan's voucher ballot propos-
al because I am concerned about its
impact on much-needed resources for
our public schools and separation of
church and state. I have also voted
against school vouchers when the issue
has come before Congress. Education
is a top priority. That's why I have
fought for safe, quality schools —
focusing on parental involvement,
lower class sizes, violence prevention,
gun safety and modern technology.
Energy Exploration and
Conservation: I have fought to protect
Michigan's great natural resources. I
will continue to focus on protecting
the quality of our water and air, pre-
serving open spaces, and conserving
our forests. I am proud to have
received the endorsement of the Sierra
Club and the support of the League of
Conservation Voters and Clean Water
Action. I support the development of
alternative sources of energy. Energy
exploration must take into considera-
tiOn environmentally sensitive areas,
including the Great Lakes.
Federal Court Appointments — Do
you have a litmus test?: No. Federal
judicial appointees should have solid
legal credentials, be fair and impartial
and have a commitment to public
service.
Gun Control: I believe we must do
everything possible to keep guns out
of the hands of our children and out
of our schools. That's why I support
zero tolerance for guns in our schools
and why I support common-sense
safety measures, such as eliminating
the gun show loophole — to require
background checks for guns bought at
gun shows.
Health Care Reform: I am co-spon-
soring a real Patient Bill of Rights so
that doctors and patients make med-
ical decisions, not insurance compa-
nies. I have also been leading efforts to
create a voluntary Medicare prescrip-
don drug benefit.
Minimum Wage: I support an increase
in the minimum wage. My opponent
cast a deciding vote against a mini-
mum wage increase.
Social Security: I was proud to be
honored by the National Committee
to Preserve Social Security and
Medicare with its top award. I've
stood up to the drug companies to
lower the costs of prescription drugs
and pass a voluntary Medicare pre-
scription drug benefit. I've fought for
a "lock box" that uses our surplus to
keep Social Security and Medicare sol-
vent into the future instead of risky
tax breaks for the wealthy.
Tax Reform: I have consistently sup-
ported targeted middle-class tax cuts
that won't threaten the economy or
the solvency of Social Security or
Medicare — including repeal of the
marriage-penalty tax, exempting the
estate tax for 99 percent of family-
owned farms and small businesses, and
repealing the Social Security earnings
limit. My tax plan will make up to
$12,000 in college tuition deductible
for middle-class families and provide a
$3,000 tax credit for families caring
for an aging parent at home. ❑
