panacea," she added. 'All we do claim is
it will be able to help the parentswho
desperately need it."
Stephen Rosman of Commerce
Township, a former Hillel parent, berat-
ed the panel from his seat for not letting
voucher proponents speak. He said later,
"Why is the Jewish community taking
our donations that we think are going to
Israel or local Jewish issues and getting
involved in political issues? Their
involvement on one side divides the
community"
JCAV co-chair Wallach defended the
decision to feature panelists on only one
side of the issue.
"This is the Jewish Coalition Against
Vouchers," he said. "If they [voucher
supporters] chose not to hold a commu-
nity forum or were not able to organize
themselves, that is their problem."
Even before the meeting, JCAV was
prepared for possible criticism. Co-chair
Mindy Nathan of West Bloomfield, said,
"This was an informational session only,
informing the public why JCAV has
taken the position it has. Frankly, since
we have a point of view, we didn't feel
we had the obligation to give the other
side a place on the platform.
"Whenever we are asked to debate, we
go out." ❑
