His most important honor to date
may be his appearance on the impres-
sive list of 2000 Einstein Technology
Medal honorees. This year's second
annual awards to 22 entrepreneurs
from around the world, put Kaplan in
the company of Steve Bornstein,
chairman of the Walt Disney Internet
Group, and honorees from New
Zealand, Spain and Jordan.
The awards are co-sponsored by the
Jerusalem Fund of Aish HaTorah,
Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert and
his Herzliya counterpart Yael German.
Kaplan had planned to visit Israel
for the first time last month for the
award ceremonies, including a dinner
with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud
Barak and a welcoming reception by
Jordan's King Abdullah in Amman's
royal palace. But because of the out-
break of the Palestinian-Israeli con-
flict, the awards presentation has

wealthy in order to
give back. Once you
have become success-
ful, you just have more
of an opportunity."

"The award ceremony was to be my
first major speaking engagement," said
Kaplan, who long ago overcame the
stigma of a stutter. Yet he admitted to
feeling a "little nervous over the
thought of appearing in front of 1,000
people, including dignitaries, govern-
ment officials and your peers."

that, eventually, I would get to where
I want to be. I knew I would do
whatever it took, and do whatever
hard work was required to get there." I
Then Kaplan, who strongly believes p
in integrity, offered another key tenet:
"Treat people right along the way."

His Michigan Mentors

Said longtime friend Joe Hart of
Kaplan, "He could have been born in
Japan. Nothing is more important to
him than his honor. If he says he will
do something, he does it."
Hart, 32, Birmingham resident and
president of the Troy-based Internet
company Infoally, has known Kaplan
since they attended the University of
Michigan and calls him "the most
loyal person I know.
Hart said Kaplan "would do any-
thing for a friend. In many ways, he
is my best friend. He has pushed me
to be my best. That is a rare gift for a
person to push you harder than you

has met Trump a couple times —
including at a Los Angeles Lakers

Trump of the role he played in the

What points about his business

Kaplan attributes the inspiration for
his success to several Detroit-area
business mentors. They include A.
Alfred Taubman, the Bloomfield
Hills shopping center magnate and
philanthropist, and David Page, of
the Detroit law firm Honigman,
Miller, Schwartz and Cohn. He has
worked for both.
Other mentors are philanthropists
David Hermelin of Bingham Farms, a
former U.S. ambassador, and William
Davidson and Eugene Applebaum,
both of Bloomfield Hills.
