Eddleston earned entry into Harvard. Spaulding attends Wayne State University. Future Goals While both Spaulding and Eddleston continue to mix athletics and acade- mics, only Spaulding is playing a var- sity collegiate sport. Eddleston enrolled in Harvard with the hope of achieving his dream of playing college football, on the strength of his strong senior season at Cranbrook. But a chronic shoulder problem, his bout with mononucleosis and a desire to focus on academics altered those plans. He says he may try out for Harvard's JV basketball or lacrosse squads later in the academic year. In the meantime, he keeps busy via intramural sports. "I'm kind of spear- heading the intramural movement in the dorm," he says. "It's a pretty big thing at Harvard. All the freshmen represent their dorm ... Every week I'm pretty much playing ultimate fris- bee — which is like a game of soccer with a Frisbee — and football and soccer. So I'm staying active in that respect. "But I'm starting to focus more on academics, especially here, because it's such a prestigious place and, obvious- ly, it's rigorous." Eddleston misses football, especial- ly playing quarterback. "That's some- thing that I truly loved. When I go and see football games, it's not as much that I'm really watching the game as much as I'm watching the quarterback." "I just love playing the game," she says. She earned a pair of assists in her first two college hock- ey games. With no in-state competition, Wayne's road trips are long. The team will travel throughout the Midwest and along the East Coast this season. Spaulding will have to balance her academic requirements with travel, games and practice. "We have a tight schedule when we're away," she says. "Our coaches are real strict about academics. We have to bring our homework along and do it on our break time. But it's manageable," she added, following her first road trip, to Minnesota. Spaulding is studying elementary education. Eddleston's path is different. His interests range from law to social studies to medicine. Both Eddleston and Spaulding have a desire to coach youth sports in the future. "It's kind of like my vicari ous way to keep playing the sports that I played," Eddleston explains. "Sports can teach you how to deal with hard times and how to deal with positive times," Eddleston says. "It keeps you on an even keel." Spaulding enjoys "making so many friends from all over. Girls that I've played with the past few years are all across the country right now, playing. So whenever we play other teams from other states, I'll recognize a face. It's kind of interesting, to know that we've all gotten to that point and spread out and then gone our separate ways. "Sports," she says, "have also helped me become more competitive. I try to be the best that I can." - ❑ The Michigan Jewish Sports Han of Fame induction dinner will be held 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield.
