Technion Scientists
Gain Recognition

Avram Hershko and Aaron
Chiechanover, professors at Technion-
Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa,
received the Lasker Award in medical
sciences on Sept. 22. They shared this
honor with Dr. Alexander Varshaysky
of the California Institute of
Technology.
Hershko and Chiechanover were
honored for their discovery of the
ubiquitin system, a protein that influ-
ences vital cellular functions, such as
the cell cycle, malignancies and
response to inflammation and immu-
nity. Understanding the ubiquitin sys-
tem will lead to the development of
new medical therapies and treatments.
The professors discovered that pro-
teins targeted for degradation are first
marked by another protein called
ubiquitin. This "death marker" attach-
es to those proteins.
Both Technion professors have
received a variety of other internation-
al and Israeli awards. Hershko has
received the Gardiner Fund Award,
the General Motors Cancer
Foundation Award and the Israel and
Weizmann prizes. This year,
Chiechanover received the
Distinguished Science Prize from the
Jewish National Fund and Austria's
Wachter Award.
