Fiddler-

on his old high-school class. The show
made a star of actor John Travolta.
TV ratings soared at the beginning
then plunged in the fourth year. "I
reached an impasse with the producer
because I wanted to 'graduate' the stu-
dents into a college format, but he
wanted to keep these 'old' men in
high school," Kaplan reflected. "So,
the show ended."
Kaplan then made some movies and
originated a one-person, live stage
show as the legendary Groucho Marx,
before going on hiatus from show busi-
ness to play the stock market full time.
"After the 1987 crash, I saw that
many stocks were undervalued, so I
did a lot of research, took some risks
and it paid off," he said. His invest-
ment strategies were featured in sever-
al financial magazines.
Always a frequenter of the Las Vegas
casinos, Kaplan gained notoriety as a
world-class poker player, winning a
number of major tournaments to sup-
plement his stock market income. But
his gambling earnings had many
peaks and valleys.
"I had a lot of success at poker and
even blackjack, but you just can't win
in the long run in casinos because the
odds are stacked against you. Also, if
you play poker with your friends, they
get angry at you if you beat them,"
said the comedian.
In the past year, Kaplan has renewed
his comedy interest, performing at a
variety of venues, and hopes to give it
a ride for at least six more months. "I
try to target the middle-age audience
in my act," he mused. "There are
many young comics today, playing
directly to the young crowd. We need
more for the older comedy fans."
He recalls performing at the old
Detroit Playboy Club and the Elmwood
Casino in Windsor. "Now, I'm happy to
be back to play downtown Detroit. I'll
do some political humor — poke fun at
the presidential debates, where we had
two 'Forest Gumps,' proving that 'stu-
pid is as stupid does.'" ❑

"Comedy Night 2000" will be held
