Some special activities will lead
into this year's annual Jewish
Book Fair at the Jewish
Community Center.
The 49th annual fair will take
place Nov. 4-12 at both JCC
locations.
At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1,
there will be a preview night at
the West Bloomfield JCC.
Members of the book fair steer-
ing committee will review books
in a variety of categories.
Admission is free; refreshments
will be served.
New to the fair this year will

Mah Jongg, the Tiles That Bind
will be shown; guests will have
the opportunity to play mah
jongg. Beginners are welcome;
instructors will be available.
Guests are asked to bring their
own sets. Admission is $5.
Refreshments will be served.
On Friday, Nov. 3, at 11
a.m., Paula Wolfson and Lloyd
Wolf will talk about their new
book Jewish Mothers: Strength,
Wisdom and Compassion.
Wolfson is a writer and clinical
social worker. Wolf is an award-
winning photographer and edu-
cator. Admission is free. The talk
will be at the West Bloomfield
JCC.
The book fair will open at
8:45 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, with
Chicago Tribune columnist Bob
Greene, author of Duty: A
Father, His Son and the Man
Who Won the War. A patron
reception will precede Green's
talk at 7:30 p.m.
Throughout the event, there
will be entertainment for chil-
dren, families and adults,
including a concert by Israeli
singer David Broza on Saturday,
Nov. 11.
A local author fair will take
place 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday,
Nov. 5. Patrons will meet
authors and be able to purchase
autographed copies of books.
Every speaker's appearance is
free and open to the community.

Event Focus:
Jewish Holidays

The Adat Shalom Synagogue
Sisterhood has planned an all-day
event on Wednesday, Nov. 15.
"Hiddur Mitzvah ---,Celebrating
the Holidays in Style" will run from
10:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Participants may
choose to attend either or both of two
sessions.
Participants will view an exhibit of
tables decorated by synagogue mem-
bers for various Jewish holidays. They
may attend a variety of ongoing work-
shops and cooking demonstrations.
The day will feature five presenters:
Rita Milos Brownstein, Norene
Gilletz, Lynn Scheele Nevins, Patricia
Rodzik and Chef Tim.
Brownstein is the author of Jewish
Holiday Style. She will present
"Entertaining with Flair" and
"Creative Ideas for Home
Hospitality."
Gilletz is a Canadian author of
numerous kosher cookbooks. At ses-
sion I, she will discuss brunch enter-
taining. Appetizers and desserts will be
the topic at session II.
Nevins has prepared a presentation
on "Jewish Ritual Objects and Their
Significance in Our Homes" at session
I only.
Rodzik will teach how to dine like
a diplomat: session I, "Tea Party
Etiquette"; session II, "Business
Etiquette."
Tim is a Detroit Weight Watchers
chef. Session I will feature his talk,
"Healthy Lifestyle Cooking for
Entertaining at Home." At session II,
"Entertaining the Low-fat Way."
Session I will run from 10:30 a.m.-
3 p.m. and will include lunch. Session
II will begin at 4:30 p.m. and end at
8:30 p.m., including a light supper.
There is a minimum $40 charge to
attend one session; $76 for both.
Patrons may receive the 5761 Torah
Fund pin with a $180 contribution
and a pin with a pearl for $300.
Proceeds will benefit the Jewish
Theological Seminary/ Women's
League Torah Fund. Arrangements are
being coordinated by Shula Fleischer,
event chair; Bobbie Miller, Torah
Fund chair; Hanna Monique Ulrych,
exhibit coordinator; Linda Warner,
program vice president; Carol
Weintraub Fogel, president.
