"On Chanukah, the kids will wrap
gifts to send to children in a Ukrainian
orphanage," says Ita Shemtov, the pro-
gram's director.
Mirzvot was the focus of the Sept.
10-24 woodcraft class. While partici-
pants learned the significance of doing
good deeds, they also created a special
masterpiece related to the day's theme.
It is a custom-made wood and plaster
Kozel (Western wall) with a slot for a
tzedakah box and built-in siddur,
Shemtov explains. The children will use
it to fulfill a variety of mitzvot daily, she

The Youth Zone: The Club for
Jewish. Kids, plans the following
activities for children ages 5-12:
• Sunday; Oct. 29: Games and
Roller Blades. Participants are asked
to bring non-perishable food items
for delivery to Yad Ezra, the kosher
food pantry in Oak Park. $5 mem-
bers/$7 non-members.
• Friday, Nov. 17: Shabbat
Sleepover
• Saturday, Nov. 18: Havdalah
Under the Stars, Astronomy Demo
and Pizza Party. Event will mark the
start of a Chanukah Toy Drive.
Sleepover, $25; Havdalah, $5 mem-
bers/$7 non-members. Kids may
participate in either or both events.
• Sunday, Dec. 17: Mad Science
Demo. Event will include wrapping
Chanukah gifts and writing mes-
sages to children in a Ukrainian
orphanage. $7 members/$9 non-
members.
• Shabbat, Jan. 27: Grand
Jeopardy Game. Bassi Shemtov of
the Friendship Circle will make a
presentation about volunteering to
work with children who have spe-
cial needs. $5 members/$7 non-
members.
• Sunday, Feb. 11: Snow Fun at
the Fridge. Tobogganing afternoon
will focus on the "snowball effect,"
of how one good deed leads to
another, Cost to be announced.
• Sunday, March 4: Hamantash
Baking, Chocolate Dipping and
Shalach Manot Packing. Kids will
package shalach manot for delivery
to an area senior facility. $5 mem-
bers/$7 non-members.
